Chapter Philanthropy & Service
Philanthropy is one of the core values outlined by the founders in our Purpose statement. Just as we do today, they strived “To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world’s work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied.” Today, women all over the world live with purpose by giving back to their communities through service.
Raising money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding parts about membership in our sisterhood. Through the foundation, actives and alumnae are provided with grants, scholarships, education, and leadership or volunteer training to enrich their experience as members of our esteemed sisterhood. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, the Alpha Gam Foundation contributes money to our international philanthropic partnerships.
Although our international partnerships have changed over the years, Alpha Gam has always been an organization focused on giving back to our communities and to our world. In the past, Alpha Gam contributed to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, but in 2017, we shifted our focus to Fighting Hunger. This campaign, called “Full Plates, Hearts, Minds” encourages reflection--so many things become possible when we don’t have to worry about where our next meal will come from.
Today, Alpha Gam’s international philanthropic partnerships are with Feeding America and Meals on Wheels. Locally, our chapter has partnered with hunger initiatives like the Manhattan chapter of Meals on Wheels, the Flint Hills Breadbasket, and Cats’ Cupboard, K-State’s on-campus food pantry for food-insecure students.
Our signature event on campus is our fall fundraiser, Alpha Gam Gives Back with Cheese and Mac! We catered gallons of macaroni & cheese from McAlister’s Deli and HyVee with a toppings bar and trays of cookies. Kornerbooth provided a photo booth, and participants could decorate cards for Meals on Wheels. This year, we raised over $3,000 for the Alpha Gam Foundation, solidifying our status as a Jewel Chapter for another year! To achieve Jewel status, the chapter must raise at least $2,000 for the Alpha Gam Foundation each year. We are proud to say that we have achieved this recognition each year since re-chartering in 2015!
I am so thankful for the opportunity to share our chapter’s passion for hunger initiatives with you. For more information about the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, click here.
